From Childhood Loss to Lifelong Advocacy

My love for helping animals began when I was very young, sparked by a moment of loss that forever changed how I saw the world.

When I was just four years old, my beloved Pekingese, Casey, went missing. He was more than a pet to me, he was my best friend, my constant companion, and my source of comfort throughout my early childhood. One day he was there, and the next, he was gone. The emptiness that followed was something I could not fully understand at that age, but I felt it deeply. I searched for him in every passing car, every distant bark, hoping I would somehow see his little face again.

I never did.

That heartbreak became a quiet promise within me, one that has guided me ever since: to never stop fighting for animals who cannot find their way home.

Over time, healing arrived in the form of a small Yorkie Poodle named Mia. From the moment she entered my life, I felt a connection that was pure and unspoken. Every afternoon, I would rush home from school knowing she would be waiting by the door, tail wagging, greeting me as though I were her entire world. Mia reminded me that grief and love can exist side by side, and that one can give meaning to the other.

As the years passed, my family welcomed more dogs into our lives, each with their own personality, story, and lessons to teach me. Through them, I learned patience, responsibility, compassion, and the extraordinary power of unconditional love. My childhood became a collection of muddy paws, wet noses, and memories that shaped not only my home, but my heart.

After graduating high school, I accepted a position at a dog boarding facility located beside Old Dominion Humane Society, a rescue organization that would ultimately change the course of my life. It was there that I met Chrissy Blake, the founder of the rescue, whose compassion and dedication opened my eyes to the world of animal welfare and advocacy.

Under her guidance, I began fostering and volunteering, witnessing firsthand the transformation of fear into trust and neglect into hope. One of my first fosters was a Pitbull affectionately known as Patched Eye Momma. She arrived fragile and uncertain, yet with time, patience, and care, she blossomed into a dog full of love and resilience. I could not bear to say goodbye, and she became what the rescue community lovingly calls a “foster fail.” Not long after, another sweet soul named Ellie entered my life and became part of my family as well.

These animals taught me more than words could ever fully express. They taught me resilience, forgiveness, and the kind of love that asks for nothing in return. Though losing them was heartbreaking, their impact remains woven into every part of who I am. I carry their love with me in every rescue, every transport, every adoption, and every life I fight to protect.

Through every heartbreak and every new beginning, I have learned that rescue work is far more than a mission. It is a promise, a promise to protect, to advocate, and to love without limits.

My commitment to homeless animals remains unwavering. I continue to advocate for spaying and neutering, support local rescue organizations, and raise awareness about responsible pet ownership and humane advocacy.

And so, I keep rescuing.

I keep traveling.
And I keep fighting for those who have no voice.

Because every life saved, every heart healed, and every story rewritten reminds me of one simple truth:

Love always finds its way home.

About

Cecilia “CeCe” Boyer

Traveling Animal Welfare Advocate & Founder of Paws on Road

My name is Cecilia Boyer, though many know me simply as CeCe. I am proud to serve as a Traveling Animal Welfare Advocate and the Founder of Paws on Road, a mission rooted in compassion, education, and the belief that every animal deserves a second chance.

For more than a decade, my journey in animal rescue and advocacy has been filled with both heartbreaking and heartwarming moments. I have witnessed frightened animals arrive at shelters uncertain and withdrawn, only to rediscover trust, safety, and love through patience and care. I have also experienced the indescribable joy of watching them leave those same shelters into the arms of families ready to cherish them forever.

None of this work would be possible without the extraordinary 501(c)(3) rescue organizations I have been fortunate to support and collaborate with throughout the years. Their dedication, guidance, and commitment to animal welfare have helped save countless lives, and for that, I remain endlessly grateful.

Throughout my advocacy journey, I have coordinated adoptions, organized lifesaving transports, supported medical care efforts, and assisted with vaccinations and grooming to help animals prepare for new beginnings. Rescue work extends far beyond simply saving lives. It is about advocating for compassion, responsibility, and respect for all living beings. Even the smallest act of kindness has the power to transform an animal’s world forever.

Equally meaningful are the people I have met along the way, volunteers, fosters, veterinarians, trainers, and rescue leaders who share the same unwavering passion for animal welfare. Many have become mentors, close friends, and family. Together, we have built a community grounded in empathy, teamwork, and hope.

Over the years, I have gained invaluable insight from animal behaviorists, veterinary professionals, and rescue advocates across the country. These experiences have taught me that animals are far more resilient than we often realize, and that patience, consistency, and compassion can truly change lives.

My commitment to animal welfare remains unwavering. I will continue advocating for stronger protections, supporting rescue organizations, and educating communities about responsible pet care, adoption, and humane advocacy.

This work is not simply what I do, it is who I am.

I am deeply honored to serve as a voice for the voiceless, a traveler with purpose, and a lifelong advocate for compassion on every road I take.
